The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian Win Art Directors Guild Awards

-

Production designers for The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian hauled in the three top motion picture honors at the Art Directors Guild‘s 20th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards, held Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Winners in the television categories were production designers for Game of Thrones, House of Cards, American Horror Story, The Big Bang Theory and The Muppets.

The ADG awards for feature films are handed out in three different themed categories. In the period film category, Jack Fisk won for The Revenant, a survival saga set on America’s untamed frontier in 1820s America; in the contemporary category, Arthur Max won for The Martian, about an astronaut stranded on Mars; and in the fantasy category, Colin Gibson won for Mad Max: Fury Road, a post-apocalyptic action adventure.

All three are nominated for the Oscar for best production design, to be handed out at the Academy Awards on Feb. 28. The other two nominees are the production designers for The Danish Girl (Eve Stewart) and Bridge of Spies, who came up short in the ADG awards.

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the ADG inaugurated a hefty new official trophy called the Cinemagundi, which was handed out to winners. The award is named after the club formed by a group of Hollywood art directors in the 1920s, including two legendary art directors William Cameron Menzies and Anton Grot.

Director David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Joy) received the guild’s cinematic imagery award presented by actor Josh Brolin. Robert Osborne, the host of Turner Classic Movies (TCM), received ADG’s inaugural William Cameron Menzies Award for championing classic motion pictures and their craft contributors, including production designers. Osborne was unable to attend due to illness and actress Diane Baker accepted on his behalf.

Recipients of this year’s lifetime achievement awards included scenic artist Bill Anderson, Oscar-nominated matte artist Harrison Ellenshaw, set designer William J. Newmon, II and Emmy- and Oscar-winning production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein.

Four legendary women art directors were inducted into the Art Directors Guild Hall of Fame – Oscar and Emmy-winning production designer Carmen Dillon, Emmy-winning production designer and Illustrator Dorothea Holt Redmond, Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning production and costume designer Patricia Norris, and art director and set designer Dianne Wager.

Oscar-nominated production designer Jeannine Oppewall, in her introduction used the occasion to take a few jabs at the ADG because women were still not making much progress in getting a higher percentage of art direction jobs or moving up in the profession. “What’s it like to be a hen in the rooster coop?” she asked.“You have to cluck, you have to scratch, you have to squawk and you have to flap like all the others in the cage just to get your fair share. There’s only one serious difference – you can’t crow.”

Actor-comedian Owen Benjamin was the sprightly host for the third consecutive year. Presenters included Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), LL Cool J, Amy Landecker and Kelsey Reinhardt (Transparent), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), Aubrey Plaza (Dirty Grandpa), Will Forte (The Last Man On Earth), KunalNayyar (The Big Bang Theory), Jaime Pressly (Mom), Niecy Nash (Getting On, Scream Queens) and Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley).
