In his opening address, MPSE President-Elect Mark Lanza noted that recognition at the Golden Reels were of special importance because the nominations came from peers in the sound editing community. He expounded on the  “power of sound” in the various formats being honored, adding, “We are all storytellers.”

As honorary presenters, re-recording mixer Kevin O’Connell and supervising sound editor Steven Ticknor, shared their experiences working with Marvel Studios Executive Vice President of Production Victoria Alonso before Academy Award-nominated producer (Little Women) Amy Pascal presented her with the 2020 MPSE Filmmaker Award.

“Victoria is a force of nature. She’s brilliant. She’s fearless. She is kind. She’s passionate about her work and unlike us, she doesn’t need to raise her voice for people to listen to her because everybody knows that Victoria knows more than everybody else in the room anyway.” Pascal continued, “Unlike many of us, she is also passionate about making the world a fairer and better place for us all.”

Alonso’s social consciousness most likely comes from her growing up in Argentina during a military dictatorship that caused the country’s citizens to literally fear for their lives. It is no wonder that she is fearless in her life. Nothing that she has to face now compares to those early years. Her positive attitude has opened doors to all manner of possibilities. Despite no connections in Hollywood, success came through her own hard work and determination.

Despite male dominance in the industry, Alonso refused to put up roadblocks to what she wanted to achieve. “I did look at Sherry Lansing and all those women who had come before me and I thought, ‘Wow, there are not many, but it can be done,’” said Alonso. “But I never thought that it was an impossibility. I live in a world of possibilities. I don’t think in impossibles. I think in possibles. I don’t see barriers. I see just the road. My thing is always, if there’s a road, we can go.”

The 2020 MPSE Career Achievement Award was presented to Academy Award-winning supervising sound editor Cecelia “Cece” Hall by two-time Academy Award-winning supervising sound editor Stephen H. Flick. Like Alonso, Hall too, entered a male dominated world, rising to prominence with the help and mentorship of men like Stephen Flick and Richard Anderson. Hall fell in love with sound because it was a “blank slate.” She learned to “think outside the box and use her imagination.”

When she moved to the Paramount sound department Hall shared, “Those early years at Paramount were full of golden opportunities to experiment, to succeed, to fail to try dealing with sound design and I came to understand first hand how the alchemy of radio waves and imagination could create sounds that resonated with the audience emotionally and really helped tell the story.”

Presenters included Grammy Award-winning recording artist Melissa Manchester, actors Nadia Gray, Michael Nardelli and Valery Ortiz, directors Michael Angelo Covino and Janina Gavankar, Avid Technology CEO Jeff Rosica, game creative director Stig Asmussen, Cinema Audio Society (CAS) president Karol Urban, EIPMA president Bernard Weiser, Vaughn Film Festival co-founder and chair Antonio Ienco, Eleven Ninety One Entertainment creative director Alex Lappano, and Hollywood Reporter tech editor Carolyn Giardina.
