Pennies from Heaven

September 1, 2004 | By Bill Desowitz

Dennis Potter’s surreal masterpiece about music, dreams and failure (with lip-syncing pop standards of the ’20s and ’30s) was first a 1978 six-part British miniseries with Bob Hoskins and then a 1981 Hollywood movie with Steve Martin. Now you can revel in both, particularly the remake, with Gordon Willis (who else?) and (BBC Video, Warner Home Video) evoking the dark, melancholy Edward Hopper.
