The Leopard

September 1, 2004 | By Bill Desowitz

Luchino Visconti’s opulent 1963 epic about the dying Italian aristocracy during the Garibaldi revolution of 1860, starring the majestic Burt Lancaster, comes to DVD at long last in both its full-length restored Italian version (transferred from the 8-perf negative in Technirama) and shorter English-language version. The image is nothing short of breathtaking, showing off every bit of Ciueppe Rotunno’s luscious cinematography and transforming the viewing experience.
