Victoria Rose Sampson is a sound editor, turned director. Her sound career began in 1973. For 25 years, she worked alongside her mother, Kay Rose, the first woman to win an Oscar for sound (The River).  Along the way, Sampson applied and was accepted into AFI’s prestigious Directing Workshop for Women where she wrote and directed her first award-winning short film, Last Chance Saloon. She went on to write and direct the short film Click Three Times, starring Isabel Sanford, from TV’s The Jeffersons. Click went on to win over 30 awards in festivals.

A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Sampson has over 190 film credits. She has been teaching post-production sound since 1992 at UCLA, AFI, USC, Moviola Digital and Video Symphony. She educates other directors about the value of recording good production sound so that editors do not have to waste their time fixing things in post that should have been fixed on the set!

On The River, Rose was able to have her own recordist in Tennessee to capture a library of sounds that were indigenous to the film – smelting plant, tractors, fields of corn, farm ambiences, and of course, the river. This attention to detail gave The River a fresh sound track from audio that didn’t exist in anybody else’s library.

Vickie’s motto about sound is:  If it sounds good, it IS good!  Sound is there to support the story – whether it’s a comedy, drama, thriller or documentary. Thinking about sound ahead of time can save money and time, and add dimension to the film.

Now that Sampson has officially retired from sound editing, she is concentrating on her writing and directing career. Her latest directing project, Shelby’s Vacation, is raising its production budget through crowd funding. You can support the independent film at www.seedandspark.com/studio/shelbys-vacation.
