Legend3D, an industry pioneer in 2D-to-3D conversion technology and services, announced its founder, chief technical officer and chief creative officer, Dr. Barry Sandrew, is leaving the company to focus on entrepreneurial endeavors. In 2000, Sandrew founded Legend3D with funding from angel investors and a handful of employees. Leveraging his visual effects and digital imaging experience — which includes 14 VFX patents and 23 years of feature film and TV experience — he and his colleagues built Legend3D into one of industry’s leading 2D-to-3D conversion studios.

“We’ve come a long way, from a single workstation in the corner of an empty room to become a dominant leader in 3D conversion and visual effects, and I see this as the perfect time for me to exit the company,” said Sandrew. “Legend3D’s anticipated success is a great legacy for me as founder, but perhaps the legacy I am most proud of are the thriving careers created during the process of building and growing the company. I am an entrepreneur who is most happy starting new businesses and creating disruptive technology. I appreciate all of Legend3D’s support as I look to future opportunities and I will continue cheering the company on to continued success.”

With more than 70 3D movies scheduled for release this year through 2016, the 3D film industry is poised for continued growth, domestically and abroad. Legend3D’s team of stereo and state-of-the-art conversion technology experts prime the company for growing marketplace demands. Legend3D recently partnered with Marvel Studios, Colombia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Warner Bros., Paramount, Walt Disney Pictures, MGM and BBC Films on major film features including Maleficent, Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

“Barry Sandrew has played a groundbreaking role in developing what the 3D industry is today. We are forever grateful for his inventive mind and the contributions he has made to 2D-to-3D technology. We wish him the best of success on his next ventures and we’re dedicated to preserving his legacy through the continued growth of Legend3D,” commented Legend3D chief executive officer Brian Robertson.

Sandrew continues to serve on several boards. He has recently taken a lead role with the Tesla Foundation Group as chairman of the board of advisors. Additionally, apart from Legend3D, Sandrew will remain involved in various aspects of the 3D industry and he will continue to be an active member of the International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society.
