Georgia’s Abortion Laws Affects the Filming Industry

-

Georgia’s recently passed abortion laws has continued to escalate tension in Hollywood, with its own economic interests in the state at stake. Yesterday’s story in the New York Times shows that the issue is now moving to the public pressure to influence the industry. Notable actors and directors, including Jason Bateman of Ozark and Alyssa Milano of Insatiable who are both filming in Georgia for Netflix, have stated that they will cease to film in the state if the law passes in January.

On Tuesday, the company producing The Power, a TV series based on the best-selling novel by Naomi Alderman, confirmed it had abandoned plans to scout Savannah, Georgia as a potential location in direct response to the new law.  Ron Howard has said that he will keep the production of Hillbilly Elegy in the state and donate to the ACLU, but he would not return if the law should go into effect.

Content providers including Disney, Warner Bros. and Netflix re not coming down on either side. Important players in Georgia’s film and television business have also refuse to directly address the issue including Tyler Perry (Tyler Perry Studios); representatives from two other Atlanta studios – Pinewood, used by Marvel films, and EUE/Screen Gems – as well as AMC, the cable channel behind The Walking Dead.

Film industry workers in Atlanta said they had yet to see any hints of work drying up. In an email to its members last week, Local 479 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, the union representing crew members, said there were no signs of an industrywide pullout from the state, and that the 30 projects underway in Atlanta was on par with previous years.
