It’s quite possible that hair and makeup designer Jenny Shircore, Academy Award winner for her work on 1999’s Elizabeth, could be adding another gold statue to her collection this year for her outstanding work on My Week With Marilyn. Michelle Williams’ remarkable transformation from her own gamine looks to the sexy blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe is due in no small part to Shircore’s vast talents. Shircore also was hair and makeup designer for W.E., the story of Wallis Simpson’s romance with King Edward VIII, which is racking up a lot of kudos this Oscar season both for Shircore and costume designer Arianne Phillips.

Every autumn in the entertainment industry, the many below-the-line crafts in a year’s films are often under appreciated by a celebrity-oriented press corps, both foreign and domestic, who often seek nothing but a parade of stars come the lengthy awards season. Yet, the various crafts in a film, with the artists behind those trades, in addition to the unquestionable impact of those fields on the look and sound of a film, are certainly worthy of equal footing to the on-camera talent. And makeup artistry and hairstyling stand as crucial elements to a film on par with costume design in the presentation of an onscreen actor or actress.

BTL Screening Series hosted a screening of The Artist, Jan. 4 in Los Angeles, followed by a Q&A with some of the film’s key below-the-line talent.

The film is an endlessly charming film dizzy with expressive, lovely imagery. Michel Hazanavicius (writer/ director/ editor) commanded an impressive team to create the dazzling spectacle of a world filled with silks, furs, Marcel waves, and bold lipstick: costume designer Mark Bridges, makeup artist Julie Hewett, and hair stylist Cydney Cornell.

The Cinema Makeup School recently held an open house to introduce the makeup industry to its new facility in L.A.’s historic Wiltern Theatre. Three-time Academy Award winning makeup artist Ve Neill led a unique special effects makeup demonstration. Neill worked side-by-side with Cinema Makeup School graduates Miranda Jory and Miyo Nakamura to apply a silicone gel-filled appliance of their creation. The design was created by Ian Lome along with Jory and Nakamura, after being carefully selected by CMS directors from a wide range of entries for its creativity, technical difficulty and originality.

Michel Hazanavicius’ new film, The Artist, brings audiences back to the freewheeling world of silent films in the roaring twenties. Without question, this black-and-white period film about movies themselves required close attention to detail in all departments including cinematography, costume design and art direction. But the makeup department had to work just as intensely to create believable appearances for all on-camera performers, notably lead actors Jean Dujardin playing silent film star George Valentin and Bérénice Bejo playing his muse, the young dancer, Peppy Miller.

Oftentimes, high-quality work in smaller-budgeted films is less recognized come awards season than those films’ older brothers, the big-budget studio tentpoles. Case in point this year might be Albert Nobbs, both a period and foreign-produced film which manages to create a visceral world onto itself inside of an $8-million budget. This film is a triumph of costume and production design, cinematography, and direction, with its characters fully inhabiting 19th century Ireland. Not to be discounted among these crafts is the film’s makeup. In addition to the many period makeups on both men and women in the story, the production was tasked with believably altering the appearances of its two female leads to make them pass as men in a traditionally male working environment.

In Southern California, one location offers a rocky lakeside backdrop that might be the setting in a classic '80s slasher film such as Friday The 13th. The region famously boasts scenery as diverse as mountains, beaches and desert, and what better place to set a horror film festival than a gothic mountainous resort town? Thus, the Big Bear Horro-Fi Film Festival was set up to provide a forum for both established and novice genre filmmakers.
