Hopefully, everyone’s recovered from Super Bowl weekend, but if you happened to miss all the commercials and the first look at a number of movies and television series, never fear, as “Over the Weekend” has your back. We’ll get to a bit of industry news first and then you can watch a bunch of them down below.
On Friday, Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence was injured on the Brockton, Massachusetts set of her new Netflix movie Don’t Look Up, directed by Adam McKay (The Big Short). Apparently, a planned explosion for early Friday morning didn’t go as planned, sending glass flying at Lawrence and cutting near her eye. Lawrence is recovering after the incident, but the production, filming around Boston, was shut down for the day. It’s unknown whether any of the others from the cast of the movie, which includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Himesh Patel, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Matthew Perry and Tomer Sisley, were on-set when the incident happened.
There wasn’t much in terms of casting, although Oscar nominee Michelle Williams will play Peggy Lee in Todd Haynes‘ biopic, Fever, according to Deadline. Working from a script by Doug Wright, the film will be produced by Marc Platt, Reese Witherspoon and Haynes’ regular producing partners at Killer Films, Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon. This seems to be a hot project as superstar Billie Eilish, her mother Maggie Baird and record label partner Justin Lubliner are in talks to come on board as executive producers.

FX House Pixomondo (PXO) announced a new virtual studio in Toronto last October, which is now up and running, and the studio has shared a video tutorial made by Pixomondo Germany to give people in the industry more information about how “Virtual Production” works.
Because of the Super Bowl on Sunday, as well as another snowstorm on the East, most people stayed in, not that there was anything new playing in movie theaters for them to go see in case there weren’t other options. Because of this, Denzel Washington‘s thriller The Little Things remained atop the box office with $2.1 million despite a massive 55% drop from its opening weekend. On Friday, Warner Bros. will open the awards hopeful Judas and the Black Messiah, starring Daniel Kaluuya from Get Out, which hopefully will give things a boost, despite it also being available on HBO Max.
And as promised, here are some of the more prominent Super Bowl ads for upcoming movies and series, including the first trailer for Marvel Studios‘ next series, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, the first episode airing on March 19. Marvel’s Wandavision is a huge hit on Disney+, and the next series looks to bring more attention to the title characters, played by Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan.
If it seems like a year since we’ve heard much from Vin Diesel‘s Dom Toretto and his family, but that’s because F9, the ninth movie in Universal Pictures’ Fast and Furious franchise, was supposed to be released last summer, but it was quickly delayed until Summer 2020. The new, second-to-last movie is once again directed by Justin Lin and brings back the cast of Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sun Kang, Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron. The movie also introduces Dom’s brother Jakob, played by John Cena, and new characters played by Cardi B and Reggaeton star Ozuna.
Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan is back with Old, a thriller starring Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung and more. It’s about a family on a tropical holiday who discover a secluded beach that within a few hours starts aging them. Universal has this one planned for a summer theatrical release on July 23.
Bob Odenkick from Better Call Saul stars in the Universal crime-action-comedy Nobody, scheduled for release on April 2. The movie is directed by Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry)
Coming full circle to Walt Disney Pictures with the Super Bowl spot for the animated Raya and the Last Dragon, which will open in theaters on March 5, as well as be available on Disney+ for a premium fee. If you can wait, the movie will hit the streamer as part of the basic subscription package on June 5. The movie features characters voiced by Kelly Marie Tran (The Last Jedi), Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Benedict Wong, Alan Tudyk and more.
