Over the Weekend 1/11/20: HBO Max Sex and the City Revival, Sex Pistols Mini-Series and More News

-

It was a relatively quiet weekend following the announcement of Director Michael Apted‘s death on Friday. Los Angeles baseball fans were also mourning the death of Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda. Still, here’s a quick update of some of the announcements.

The big news seemed to be the fact that HBO‘s popular series Sex and the City was going to be revived at HBO Max with Sarah Jessica ParkerCynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis all returning to reprise their characters Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbs, and Charlotte York, respectively. Kim Cattrall would not be returning as her character Samantha Jones, for reasons that are yet unknown. The three actors will executive produce the new chapter titled “And Just Like That…” with creator Michael Patrick King. After the initial series, based on Candace Bushnell‘s book of the same name, wrapped in 2004, it led to two theatrical feature films in 2008 and 2010, the first one doing far better than its sequel.

Parker teased the new show on Instagram over the weekend.

Nomadland
Frances McDormand in Nomadland (Searchlight Studios)

The National Society of Film Critics announced its 55th annual awards with Searchlight Studios’ Nomadland and its director Chloé Zhao taking top honors, the movie seeming to be the top choice among many critics. The film’s star, Frances McDorman, also won in the Best Actress category, while Delroy Lindo won Best Actor for Spike Lee‘s Da 5 Bloods, and newcomer Maria Bakalova won Supporting Actress for her role in Borat Subsequent MoviefilmPaul Raci won for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Darius Marder‘s Sound of Metal.

There hasn’t been a lot of developments in terms of casting, other than the fact that the Emmy-nominated British actor Jovan Adepo, who can be seen in the CBS All Access series, The Stand, has joined FilmNation‘s serial killer thriller, Misanthrope, with Ben Mendelsohn and Shailene Woodley. That movie is going to start filming in Montreal this month.

From Variety comes the news that Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) is developing a limited series for FX based on infamous punk band, the Sex Pistols, based on the 2018 memoir by guitarist Steve Jones called “Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol.”  Boyle will direct and executive produce the series, which will be called Pistol that’s already been cast with Toby Wallace playing Jones, Anson Boon playing John “Johnny Rotten” Lydon, Louis Partridge as Sid Vicious, Jacob Slater as Paul Cook, Fabien Frankel as Glen Matlock, Dylan Llewellyn as Wally Nightingale, Sydney Chandler as Chrissie Hynde, Emma Appleton as Nancy Spungen, and Maisie Williams as punk icon Jordan.

Wonder Woman
Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman 1984

It was another dismal weekend at the box office as Warner Bros‘ Wonder Woman 1984 was #1 for a third weekend in a row with an estimated $3 million. Universal‘s The Croods: A New Age and News of the World took second and third place with $1.8 and $1.2 million, respectively. Wonder Woman has only made $32.6 million domestically, compared to the $98.8 million overseas. The Croods sequel has made $36.9 million in North America and another $90.9 million overseas. The Tom Hanks Western has grossed just $7.1 million in theaters, and it will be coming to Video on Demand this Friday a/p the studios’ deals with a number of theater chains.

We’ll wrap things up with a few new trailers for movies that will stream on Netflix within the next month. First up is Sam Levinson‘s Malcolm & Marie, starring John David Washington (Tenet) and Zendaya (Euphoria), which is thought to be a possible Oscar entry. After that is Penguin Bloom, a new true-life drama starring Naomi Watts and Andrew Lincoln, the latter being the star of The Walking Dead.
