SOC Honors Geoffrey Haley for Cherry, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s Jim McConkey as Camera Operators of the Year

societyofcameraoperators-300x2255674045634921871736.pngOn Sunday night, April 11, 2021, the Society of Camera Operators (SOC) announced the winners of its 2021 Camera Operator of the Year Awards and Creative Vision Celebration in the Film and Television categories.

The honors for Camera Operator of the Year Film & Television were given out via a rather moving Zoom meeting  that brought together  the camera community to honor and celebrate the industry’s triumphs, masterful storytelling, and stand-out creativity over the past year.

This was by no means your typical awards ceremony as it involved many touching tributes and memorials by the SOC membership to their fallen brothers and sisters in the camera crew who lost their lives in 2020, some due to COVID, but also the two categories were presented in a far more effective way. Each nominee was announced and asked a question about the shows they shot before showing an extended reel of their nominated work.

Geoffrey Haley, SOC, won his second Camera Operator of the Year award for film in a row from the SOC, for his work on the Russo Brothers‘ Cherry (also nominated for an ASC Award), while veteran Jim McConkey, SOC won for his work on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, giving an extremely touching speech as thanks.

(Note: Below the Line will have an interview with Mr. Haley conducted before the SOC Camera Operator of the Year Awards shortly.)
