Company 3 London Names John Quartel as Technical Director

-

Company 3 announced the appointment of color scientist John Quartel to the position of technical director of its London location.

Quartel will report to director of operations Claire McGrane and will oversee expansion and integration of Company 3’s color pipeline, from dailies through editorial, visual effects and post.

“We are very pleased that John is joining us at Company 3,” McGrane said. “He brings with him an extremely high level of expertise in color science and in its practical applications in our industry.”

Quartel comes to Company 3 from FilmLight, a manufacturer of high-end scanners and color grading technology of which he was a founding member. He worked there with numerous facilities to tailor workflows and color-management protocols to maximize the potential of FilmLight products.

“This technology is constantly evolving,” Quartel said. “There is a new variety of digital camera on the scene every few months, and directors of photography naturally want to take advantage of their ever-expanding options. Postproduction changes just as quickly, and displays, grading tools and workflows need to stay ahead of those changes.”

Originally from Australia, Quartel came to London in the mid-1990s to earn his PhD in optical physics from Imperial College. He has spent the past 13 years in the London postproduction industry, first at a facility and then with FilmLight.

Company 3 London has recently hired McGrane, as well as colorist Greg Fisher, director of feature sales John Gray and head of production Erin McGookin.
