Netflix has bought visual effects studio, Scanline VFX, which has provided visual effects for most of the biggest movies of the year, including Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsGodzilla vs. KongZack Snyder’s Justice League, Free Guy, and many others.

More importantly, Scanline worked on scenes for Netflix’s current sci-fi action series, Cowboy Bebop, as well as did visual effects for its hit series, Stranger Things.

The purchase was announced Monday by Netflix’s VP of Studio Operations Amy Reinhard with plans to invest in Scanline’s pipeline, infrastructure and workforce to advance the streamer’s virtual production. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but the deal is expected to close in early 2022.

Scanline will remain a standalone business that will still be able to work for other clients and students beyond Netflix.  Netflix will still work with other VFX companies and studios for its shows and films.

Founded in 1989, Scanline is led by VFX Super Stephan Trojansky, who is known for his proprietary fluid rendering system, Flowline, for which he won a Scientific and Technical Oscar in 2008. The company has offices in Vancouver, Montreal, Los Angeles, London, Munich, Stuttgart and Seoul.

The purchase comes mere weeks after Peter Jackson sold the division of his Weta Digital company to Unity for a whopping $1.6 billion.
