After ceding momentum to CODA over the past few weeks, Jane Campion‘s Netflix movie The Power of the Dog reasserted itself as the movie to beat at the Oscars with its big wins for Best Picture and Best Director at both the BAFTA Film Awards and the Critics Choice Awards this weekend.

The Power of the Dog was nominated for eight BAFTAs, though it only won those two awards. That’s because Denis Villeneuve‘s epic sci-fi movie Dune won five of the 11 awards it was nominated for, including for cinematography, production design, sound, special visual effects, and Hans Zimmer’s score.

Both the BAFTAs and the Critics Choice Awards gave acting prizes to actor Will Smith (King Richard), supporting actress Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), and supporting actor Troy Kotsur (CODA), and while Jessica Chastain triumphed in the CCA’s Best Actress race, the BAFTAs went for After Love star Joanna Scanlan. Thus, the Critics Choice Awards echoed the SAG Awards in the lead performance categories.

In addition to their supporting statues at the BAFTAs, CODA won Best Screenplay (Sian Heder), while West Side Story took home a trophy for casting. Meanwhile, over at the Critics Choice Awards, Kenneth Branagh‘s Belfast won Best Ensemble, including Jude Hill, Jamie Dornan, Caitrona Balfe, Judi Dench and Ciaran Hinds.

On the TV side of the CCA ledger, Jean Smart won two awards for her lead role in Hacks and her supporting turn in Mare of Easttown, which won Best Limited Series, while Succession and Ted Lasso won the drama and comedy series prizes.

The Critics Choice Awards were hosted by Taye Diggs and Nicole Byer, and they also snagged Jimmy Kimmel to present Billy Crystal with a Lifetime Achievement Award, while Issa Rae presented Oscar winner Halle Berry with the SeeHer Award.

Rebel Wilson hosted the in-person ceremony for the BAFTA Awards, where she gave Russian leader Vladimir Putin the middle finger in protest of the country’s invasion of Ukraine, and though celebrity turnout was strong, Campion and Smith weren’t able to collect their BAFTAs as they were in Los Angeles for the CCAs. Likewise, Kotsur and DeBose both decided to attend the BAFTAs, so the two SAG Award winners accepted their Critics Choice Awards from London rather than Los Angeles.
