Eagle-Con 2022

The Art Directors Guild (ADG, IATSE Local 800) will once again serve as a Founding Sponsor of Cal State LA’s Eagle-Con, which will be held from March 10-12.

Eagle-Con is a convention that explores issues of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, identity, and representation in science fiction and fantasy across media. This year, the focus will be on Media Multiverses, and for the first time, everything can be seen for free both virtually and in person at the university.

“We are proud that Eagle-Con continues to break new ground every year by exploring issues of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, identity, ability, and representation in science fiction and fantasy. Eagle-Con celebrates the working artists of these genres and helps inspire emerging young artists from diverse backgrounds to pursue career paths they may not have realized were possible,” said Chuck Parker, ADG 800 National Executive Director.

A panel titled Breaking Bad or Into the Entertainment Business will feature production designer and former president of the Art Directors Guild Mimi Gramatky, production designers Kedra Dawkins and Niko Viliavongs, graphic artist Sarah Gonzales and set designer Rick Nichol.

The opening day will close out with the presentation of the Imaginator Award for “wondrous achievement in visual conceptualization” to set designer, concept artist and illustrator Dawn Brown, who has worked on such films and TV shows as Star Trek, Terminator: Dark Fate, The Hunger Games, The X-Files, Alice in Wonderland, and the upcoming Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

On Day Two, the Lemonade Institutional Award will be presented to the 501st Legion, an all-volunteer organization that promotes interest in the Star Wars universe through high-quality cosplay and also makes contributions to their communities through costumed charity work.

On Saturday afternoon, previous Imaginator Award winners will discuss their careers creating legendary science fiction, with panelists including production designers and ADG members such as Wynn Thomas, (Mars Attacks!, Hidden Figures, Get Smart, Da 5 Bloods), Rick Carter (Jurassic Park, Avatar, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), and Oliver Scholl (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Suicide Squad, Venom, Independence Day).

A virtual exhibition of works by members of the Guild can be accessed and explored using Matterport 3D. Entitled Bringing Imagination Into View, it features work from some of Hollywood’s hottest productions, including Brown’s drawings from her aforementioned projects. It also features craft contributions to Aquaman and Galaxy Quest as well as a Marvel wall, a wall of movie vehicles, and props such as the Wonka Bar.

Access to the virtual gallery is available by clicking here, and registration for the free conference can be found here.
