Patton Oswalt will host the 70th MPSE Golden Reel Awards, it was announced on Tuesday by the Motion Picture Sound Editors.
Honoring outstanding achievement in sound editing, the Golden Reel Awards will take place on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.
“Like other below-the-line crafts, sound editing doesn’t get the praise and acknowledgment it deserves,” Oswalt said in a statement that expressed his admiration for the art of sound editing. “Sound editors use their creativity to bring entire worlds to life. It’s the sound, as much as anything else, that immerses the viewer in the story. Sound editors are so critical to any finished project that I am happy to celebrate them at this landmark 70th Golden Reel Awards.”
“Patton Oswalt is one of the funniest and most likable entertainers in Hollywood,” added MPSE President Mark Lanza, who believes that Oswalt will set the perfect tone for the ceremony. “He will lend a lot of fun and laughter to what we promise will be an incredible evening.”
Oswalt most recently starred in the Magnolia Pictures comedy I Love My Dad, which won top prizes at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival, and his most recent comedy special, We All Scream (which also marked his directorial debut), launched on Netflix in September.
Oswalt earned critical acclaim for his performances in Robert Siegel‘s Big Fan as well as Jason Reitman‘s Young Adult, which paired him with Charlize Theron. His feature credits also include Ben Stiller‘s Zoolander and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Steven Soderbergh‘s The Informant with Matt Damon, the Tom Hanks movie The Circle, Jody Hill‘s Observe and Report, Todd Phillips‘ Starsky and Hutch, and Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Magnolia. He also voiced Remy the Rat in Pixar’s Ratatouille and replaced Louis C.K. as Max in The Secret Life of Pets 2.
Oswalt is also a Grammy-winning comedian and Emmy-winning writer whose acting credits on TV include The King of Queens, Parks and Recreation, and Veep. He also voices the narrator on ABC’s hit comedy The Goldbergs.
This year’s Golden Reel Awards will be the first in three years to be held live and the MPSE is going all out to make it a special evening in the spirit of Old Hollywood. The ceremony will include a new venue — the historic, 1238-seat Wilshire Ebell Theatre — along with surprise guests and features as the entertainment industry’s leading sound organization celebrates its 70th year in recognizing the outstanding creative accomplishments of those who practice this unique craft.
