Blackmagic Design has offered congratulations to the 93rd Oscars®-nominated films and the production professionals who helped bring these films to life. Blackmagic Design is honored that its products, such as DaVinci Resolve Studio and Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, were used on groundbreaking films including Mulan, Minari, and News of the World.
Films nominated that used Blackmagic Design products include nominees from all over the world and in a range of categories such as Best Motion Picture, Best International Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature and Achievement in Visual Effects.
Blackmagic Design has shared quotes from a couple of the post-production individuals who used Blackmagic Design products to finish their Oscar-nominated films, as well as shining a spotlight on A24’s Minari.
FotoKem Senior Colorist David Cole graded Minari using DaVinci Resolve Studio. Minari revolved around the landscape featured in the film, and both the cinematographer and the director wanted to keep the film feeling ground in the 1980s, with subtle hints of hope reflected throughout. “I used DaVinci Resolve to further extend the LUT and get that 1980’s Midwest feel without screaming ‘this is a period film,” said Cole. “It’s a very popular genre at the moment, because of Stranger Things and Wonder Woman, but we didn’t want Minari to wander into that retro color space. The Resolve tools allowed me to be artistic with that visual edict.”
Cole provided examples of how he utilized Resolve throughout the course of the shoot, with one particular scene standing out for him while using DaVince Resolve Studio: “In another scene, David pulls a drawer out and cuts his foot. This was also composed as an overhead shot and there was a visual effect of blood on his foot and the ground as an enhancement. In the grade, Isaac, (editor) Harry Yoon and I wanted to adjust how much blood was under his foot. Using the layering and rotoscoping features of Resolve, I was able to choose the elements we wanted, and tweak it a little, animating how the blood creeps out throughout the course of the shot. The visual effect shot was full blood, and the clean plate had minimal blood, so between those two extremes we were able to reveal just the right amount.”

Hunger Ward, nominated in the Best Short Documentary category, used both DaVinci Resolve for color correction and Pocket Cinema Camera 6K for shooting in war-torn Yemen. The film was shot inside two of the most active therapeutic feeding centers in Yemen, and documented two female health care workers fighting to thwart the spread of starvation against the backdrop of a forgotten war.
DP of Hunger Ward Jeffrey Ball shared: “Filming in an active war zone forced us to have to be discreet and efficient, and able to capture at any moment. One of the shots that the camera let us get was of a young girl getting an IV removed at a center our director was at. The Pocket let him have less of a presence and just shoot without intruding. Shots like that were so important to the story we were trying to tell and the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K worked out great.”
