Mumbai, India-based Prime Focus Group announced that it had acquired Post Logic Studios and visual-effects company Frantic Films VFX.
Prime Focus Group already owns six visual-effects and postproduction facilities across India and four facilities in London. The acquisition will give the company its first foothold in North America, with facilities in Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver and Winnipeg (along with some 55,000 square feet of prime real estate in the heart of Hollywood).
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The company’s facilities in India serve the country’s $2 billion a year Bollywood film industry. And since acquiring VTR last year, the company’s London facilities have been serving the European film and television industries.
Post Logic Studios is bicoastal, with offices in Hollywood and New York. The company offers DI and postproduction services to independent and studio feature films. Frantic Films is focused on visual effects with offices in Los Angeles, Vancouver and Winnipeg.
Prime Focus Group will also be acquiring Frantic Films Software, the company’s R&D division that develops and markets visual effects software.
Frantic Films also operates live-action production and postproduction facilities and a TV commercial division that will not be a part of this acquisition, and will continue to operate independently out of Winnipeg and Toronto.
“The acquisitions strategically complete the Prime Focus Group’s global proposition to ensure the best creative and technical services for content companies worldwide,” said Namit Mahlotra, founder of Prime Focus Group. “By virtue of their fantastic reputations and top quality services, Post Logic and Frantic Films will facilitate a gateway for Prime Focus Group into all of the major studios. Both companies also have strong R&D divisions that have developed proprietary technologies and processes for film color management, visual effects and pipeline collaboration which will benefit the organization as a whole.”
“We look forward to being part of the successful Prime Focus Group organization and to taking advantage of creative synergies across continents and across disciplines to deliver a new model for the future of digital postproduction,” said Larry Birstock, CEO, Post Logic Studios.
Frantic Films co-founder Chris Bond said that he “anticipates working closely with Prime Focus Group companies across North America, India and the U.K. to broaden our pipelines internationally, and offer our film VFX clients an expanded slate of post services.”
Prime Focus Group was formed in 1997 in a garage with four people and an investment of $10,000. Today, the company has grown to an organization of over 1,250 people with a current market capitalization of over $400 million, offering a spectrum of services including visual effects, digital film lab (DI, film scanning and film recording) telecine, editing, motion control and HD production.
