Stardust Drives VFX Behind Toyota’s New Rav 4 EV Promo

-

“Toyota Rav4 EV”
Bi-coastal production company Stardust created a highly stylized and darkly futuristic world for Toyota’s promo spot for the new Rav 4 EV. Partnering with Saatchi & Saatchi LA, Stardust created a :50 spot featuring a mix of visual effects, photo-real CG and live-action to achieve the final sci-fi look.

The spot highlights the EV’s features as it sails through a fully CG black-and-white environment designed to look like a 3D urban blueprint, with thousands of individual data points. The vehicle ultimately breaches the virtual world’s boundary, breaking into the real world and heading toward downtown Los Angeles. Stardust designed and built the CG world, and created photo-real CG animations of the EV for both the virtual and live-action worlds. French VFX shop Mathematic provided support for CG development, 3D animation, compositing and rendering.

“This project was another solid effort by our design and animation teams to push themselves beyond their creative comfort zones,” said Dexton Deboree, managing director and partner, Stardust. “We’ve made a concerted effort to seek out projects that offer us a real chance to explore our artists’ untapped talents and skills, and we’re really excited by the results of this endeavor.”

“The whole team at Saatchi really offered us a true collaboration, allowing us to form the vision for this spot and also providing support and guidance when needed,” Stardust founder and creative director Jake Banks added. “It’s the ideal scenario that directors dream of but don’t often find.”
