Technicolor Launches CineStyle Color Assist

-

LR-Technicolor CA Screenshot 1Technicolor launched its new CineStyle Color Assist software at NAB 2013 – a picture-style profile for DSLR cameras that allows users to shoot cinematic quality video in a color logarithmic mode. The system gives independent filmmakers access to studio color effects and color correction tools based on Technicolor’s DP Lights System. The simple, easy-to-use interface can be learned in less than a day and works directly with Apple Final Cut Pro X, Apple Final Cut Pro 7, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 and CS6. It is available for Mac or PC.

Features include previewing real-time color correction and grading with render free playback. Color Assist has dual monitor support for full-screen playback. Styling and effects can be automatically applied to all of clips on the timeline with the same name. Non-destructive MetaColor technology optimizes creative flexibility. Up to nine color compositions can be saved per video clip for previewing grading ideas with the director.

CineStyle can be downloaded as a unique ‘Picture Style’ onto high-end DSLRs. With the CineStyle profile installed on their DSLRs, filmmakers and cinematographers can match the look and color capabilities of much more expensive equipment and processes. Captured clips can easily be color graded to match different cinematic styles from various sources and genres, including 35 mm film. A greater dynamic color range can be exploited when shooting in difficult lighting conditions, and users can intercut DSLR footage with content from other high-end cameras such as RED, ARRI ALEXA, SONY F-65 and 35 mm film.

Color Assist supports .MOV, .AVI, .FLV and .MP4 and codec formats ProRes (except 4444), WMV, H.264 and DV. CineStyle camera profiles create log footage, and Looks are optimized for this. For non-log footage, the Curves Tool can be used to select the Inverse S-Curve, which adjusts the video to look more like log footage.

Technicolor Color Assist software comes with 25 looks for quick grading. The library of signature color looks include both chemical and digital processes, developed by Technicolor color scientists. The Looks are inspired by major motion pictures and TV features that utilized Technicolor Creative Services.

3-Way Color Corrector, Key Selector and Curves Adjustments can be used to tweak the image from there. A secondary color correction operation is offered with Color Assist’s Key Selector to define and adjust a specific color or range of colors.

The software is available for $99. Additional Color Assist Looks – from Classic Cinema to Extreme Effects – are also available in $19 packages, which include 10 looks.
