Anyone who saw filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie‘s Mission: Impossible – Fallout was probably impressed with all the locations which the film visited in the latest adventure for Tom Cruise‘s Ethan Hunt and the IMF (Impossible Missions Force). Because of this, it should be little surprise that the Location Managers Guild International (LMGI) has picked McQuarrie to receive its Eva Monley Award at its 7th Annual LMGI Awards.
Hosted by Isaiah Mustafa, this years’s awards take on the theme “2020 Vision: We See It First,” and it will be a virtual ceremony held on October 24 at 2:00 pm PST.
Other honorees this year include director Spike Lee, receiving the LMGI Trailblazer Award, and Gary Sinise, receiving the Humanitarian Award for his Gary Sinise Foundation. Last year’s Eva Monley Award winner was Oscar-nominated filmmaker Peter Weir.
McQuarrie received an Oscar for his early screenplay for Bryan Singer‘s The Usual Suspects in 1995, also receiving awards from BAFTA, the Edgar Allen Poe Award and Independent Spirit Award, as well as being recognized by the Writers Guild of America. McQuarrie turned to directing with The Way of the Gun, starring Ryan Phillippe, Benicio Del Toro and James Caan in 2000, before reuniting with Singer for 2008’s Valkyrie, starring Tom Cruise, which began McQuarrie’s long run of collaborations with the actor. McQuarrie directed Cruise in 2012’s Jack Reacher, worked on rewriters for Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow, directed by Doug Liman, and then directed the last two MI:5 movies, Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible – Fallout, both which were worldwide blockbusters.
On the decision, former LMGI President and current Awards Co-Chair Lori Balton said: “McQ ‘gets’ the importance of location pros and the legacy of Eva Monley who worked with some of his influencers (David Lean and John Huston). Having Edgar Wright present the award spotlights our craft, with two consummate professionals championing location managers and scouts.”
