Nominees for the 82nd Annual Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards were announced early this morning, and it came as little surprise that James Cameron’s wildly successful sci-fi blockbuster, Avatar scored big in both above- and below-the-line categories.
The stereoscopic film, which recently surpassed Titanic as the highest grossing film of all time, racked up a total of nine nominations, including art direction, cinematography, directing, film editing, original score, best picture, sound editing, sound mixing, and of course, visual effects.
Kathryn Bigelow‘s The Hurt Locker also got nine nominations, including a nom for Jeremy Renner for performance by an actor in a leading role, cinematography, directing, film editing, original score, best picture, sound editing, sound mixing and original screenplay.
Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds came in with eight nominations, including performance by an actor in a supporting role, Christoph Waltz, as well as cinematography, directing, film editing, best picture, sound editing, sound mixing and original screenplay.
Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, and Up in the Air both received six nominations.
New rules, which allow for 10 nominations for Best Picture, opened the door for Disney’s Up to get a nom, marking the second time in its history, that the Academy has nominated an animated film for the top honor. (The last was Beauty and The Beast in 1991).
