By Jack EganAt the seventh annual Costume Designers Guild Awards on February 19, red knit sailor hats were doffed to costume designer Milena Canonero, who won for her work on The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou in the contemporary film category.Colleen Atwood was the winner for best costumes for a period/fantasy film for the Edwardian-looking clothes in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Event.On the small screen front, designer Patricia Field was honored for the third time for Sex and the City in the contemporary television category. Jill Taylor was voted an award for The Life and Death of Peter Sellers in the best costume designs in the period/fantasy TV category.The award for best commercial work went to Jennifer Rade, for her costume for the iPod dancer in the ad for Apple Computer.A number of honorary awards were handed out.New inductees into the Anne Cole Hall of Fame were Vera West (Destry Rides Again), Irene (Gaslight, Kismet), René Hubert (Forever Amber).Robert Fletcher (North and South) received the Lancel Career Achievement Award for Television. Anthea Sylbert (Rosemary’s Baby, Carnal Knowledge) got the Lacoste Career Achievement Award for Film.And Debbie Reynolds, who has amassed a large collection of movie and TV costumes that are headed for a museum in Gatlinburg, Tenn., near Dollywood, got the Swarovski President’s Award for her commitment to costume preservation.
