The 8th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards were held February 25 at the Beverly Hilton in a black-tie event hosted by returning MC Anjelica Huston, in an aubergine velour strapless gown. Actress Jane Seymour presented the 2006 CDG Hall of Fame inductees: Bill Thomas, known for his Oscar-winning costume design on the 1960 film Spartacus; William Travilla, responsible for Marilyn Monroe’s most memorable dresses; and Renie Conley, whose work on Cleopatra earned her one of four Oscars.Presenting stars were out in force, including a ribald Kathy Griffin, Deadwood’s Ian McShane with cast-mates Molly Parker and Kim Dickens, and actress Jeri Ryan, who gave a heartfelt presentation for Robert Blackman, the designer responsible for her famous second-skin cyborg outfit from Star Trek Voyager.The winners:Excellence in Contemporary Film: Danny Glicker TransamericaExcellence in Period Film: Colleen Atwood Memoirs of a GeishaExcellence in Fantasy Film: Isis Mussenden The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the WardrobeOutstanding Made for Television Movie/Mini-Series: Eduardo Castro ElvisOutstanding Contemporary Television Series: Jill Ohanneson Six Feet UnderOutstanding Period/Fantasy Television Series: April Ferry RomeExcellence in Commercial Costume Design: Christopher Lawrence Capitol One “Viking”Mary Rose was presented with a Distinguished Service Award and Robert Blackman received a Spotlight in Television 2006 Award.IATSE president Thomas Short received the Swarovski President’s Award along with a surprise special award from the City of Los Angeles in a presentation by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Short, a Cleveland native, also received an additional award sent to him from Frank G. Jackson, mayor of Cleveland.The prestigious Edith Head Hall of Fame 2006 Award went to Anna Hall Johnstone.Three-time Oscar nominee, actress Joan Allen received the 2006 Distinguished Actor Award.
