MPSE to Honor Avatar Sound Editor Gwendolyn Yates Whittle With Its 2023 Career Achievement Award


The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) has announced that it will honor Supervising Sound Editor Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, a two-time Oscar-nominee for her work on Avatar and Tron: Legacy, with its 2023 Career Achievement Award.

Whittle, whose more than 150 film and television credits also include Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Minority Report, Munich, Iron Man, Cloverfield, Jurassic World, and Fight Club, will receive the award at the 70th MPSE Golden Reel Awards on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.

“An extraordinarily gifted sound artist, Gwen has lent her talents to an amazing diversity of films and television shows,” MPSE President Mark Lanza said in a statement. “She has been a true pioneer since her earliest days in the industry and has served as a mentor, role model, and inspiration to countless aspiring sound editors. The MPSE takes great pride in presenting her with our annual Career Achievement Award.”

The MPSE Career Achievement Award recognizes sound artists who have distinguished themselves by meritorious works as an individual and fellow contributor to the art of sound for feature film, television, and gaming, and for setting an example of excellence for others. Past winners include 2022 recipient Anthony “Chic” Ciccolini, III, Dennis Drummond, Cece Hall, Stephen H. Flick, John Paul Fasal, Harry Cohen, Richard King, Skip Lievsay, Randy Thom, Larry Singer, Walter Murch, and George Watters II.

“This award reminds me of how lucky and grateful I am to have had the opportunities I’ve had,” Whittle said in her own statement. “I have huge support from my family and my colleagues that allows me to thrive in a very competitive industry, still be in the thick of it, and work with the most creative people from all over the planet. Huge thanks to all the people who have mentored, supported, and encouraged me through the last 30-plus years. I am eager to see where this takes me next.”

Based at Skywalker Sound in Northern California for more than 30 years, Whittle has worked on well over 120 films, from small independents to blockbusters. Starting as a PA in the art department on the Sundance film Smooth Talk, she later made the leap to sound on The Unbearable Lightness of Being and never looked back. Specializing in production sound and ADR editing, she has collaborated with brilliant directors and sound designers from all over the world. She has devoted much of 2022 to the final mix for Avatar: The Way of Water in Wellington, New Zealand.

“My passion comes from the people I work with. The camaraderie between the people on a crew keeps my faith in humanity alive; we can and do create gorgeous soundscapes together. Too often we face daunting deadlines and stress, but we always manage to deliver, and deliver well,” added Whittle, who recently earned an Emmy nomination for her work on the Marvel series WandaVision.  

Additionally, Whittle is the recipient of six MPSE Golden Reel Awards (TitanicSaving Private RyanThe Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonSuper 8Epic, and Carne e Arena), alongside 20 total nominations. Along with MPSE, Whittle is a member of AMPAS, BAFTA, and SAG, and she also made an appearance in the documentary Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound.

Vicon Introduces Mobile Mocap at SIGGRAPH

Motion capture systems developer Vicon is previewing a futuristic new “Mobile Mocap” technology at SIGGRAPH 2011 in Vancouver. Moving mocap out of the lab and into the field, Vicon's Mobile Mocap system taps several new technologies, many years in the making. At the heart of Mobile Mocap is a very small lipstick-sized camera that enables less obtrusive, more accurate facial animation data. The new cameras capture 720p (1280X720) footage at 60 frames per second. In addition, a powerful processing unit synchronizes, stores, and wirelessly transmits the data, all in a tiny wearable design.
