Eddie Murphy‘s comedy sequel Coming 2 America led the way among feature winners at the 9th Annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, picking up three prizes from IATSE Local 706. Saturday Night Live was the big winner on the TV side, as the long-running sketch series got the last laugh, winning three trophies as well.

The guild held a live show on Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where guests were required to show proof of vaccination and a negative COVID test before being provided MUAHS Awards masks.

Produced by Paramount but released by Amazon, Coming 2 America won awards for contemporary make-up, contemporary hair styling, and special make-up effects. The film is up for an Oscar this year along with Disney’s Cruella, which won an award for period and/or character make-up. Amazon picked up a fourth award on Saturday night, as Being the Ricardos won for period and/or character hair styling.

In addition to Coming 2 America and Cruella, this year’s MUAHS nominees include Dune, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and House of Gucci. Last year, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom won a pair of MUAHS Awards en route to winning the Oscar.

Melissa Peterman hosted the MUAHS Awards, which also honored achievements in television, commercials, music videos, and live theater. The ceremony saw Jon Favreau virtually accept the guild’s Distinguished Artisan Award, while Doug Jones (The Shape of Water) was given the newly created Chair Award, and Christina Smith took home the Vanguard Award.

Producer Paula Wagner presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to Oscar and Emmy-winning make-up artist Michèle Burke (the Mission: Impossible and Austin Powers movies), who was the first woman to win an Oscar in her field, while producer Lauren Shuler Donner bestowed the second Lifetime Achievement Award of the evening to Emmy-winning hair stylist Joy Zapata, whose credits include Star Trek: The Next Generation, Westworld and 2018’s A Star Is Born.
