MPSE Awards

At the 53rd annual Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards, held March 4 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, the society announced two MPSE firsts. With the membership now open to foley artists, it was the first time foley editors and artists were presented with Golden Reel trophies. And for the first time, the society presented its career achievement award to a music editor: sprightly octogenarian Else Blangsted, a favorite of composers Dave Grusin and Quincy Jones (who paid heartfelt tribute to the German-born editor), whose credits include Ordinary People, On Golden Pond, Tootsie, The Color Purple, The Man with Two Brains and Children of a Lesser God.There was no one big winner, with different movies and television shows singled out for trophies across the 16 categories. Audience favorites included Richard King and team for War of the Worlds and Mark Jan Wlodarkiewicz and team for Walk the Line in feature film categories; and Jon I. Mete for Lackawanna Blues and Walter Newman and team for ER “Two Ships” in the television categories. With the sheer amount of awards given out (with the foley folks, some teams were as many as 11 people), it was amazing how smooth, professionally presented and well-paced the awards ceremony was. The atmosphere was upbeat and social, and the celebrations continued into the night at the Widget Post afterparty. The winners:Best Sound Editing in Feature Film Animation: SFX/Foley, Dialogue/ADR & Music: James Mather, Danny Hambrook, Michael Connell, Simon Changer, Graham Headicar, Tim Owens, Derek Trigg, Joseph Park Stracey, Peter Burgis, Andy Derrick Wallace And Gromit in the Curse Of The Were-RabbitBest Sound Editing in Feature Film Foreign: SFX/Foley, Dialogue/ADR: Randy Thom, Dennis Leonard, Alex Joseph, Bjorn Ole Schroeder, Dan Laurie, Andy Kennedy, Doug Murray, Jon Olive, Sam Auguste, Peter Burgis, Andy Derrick Harry Potter And The Goblet Of FireBest Sound Editing in Feature Film: Music: Roy Prendergast, Jamie Lowry CasanovaBest Sound Editing in Feature Film: Music – Musical: Mark Jan Wlodarkiewicz, Terry Delsing, Bunny Andrews, Frank Wolf Walk The LineBest Sound Editing in Feature Film: Dialogue and ADR: Laura Harris, Michelle Pazer, Michael Hertlein Memoirs Of A GeishaBest Sound Editing in Feature Film: Sound Effects and Foley: Richard King, Christopher Flick, Michael Babcock, Aaron Glascock, Hamilton Sterling, Michael W.
