Oscar Nominations 2023: Top Gun: Maverick Up for Best Picture, But Tom Cruise Snubbed for Best Actor

-

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards, and A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the pack with 11 nominations.

Michelle Yeoh made history as the first-ever Asian nominee in the Best Actress category, and her co-stars Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Stephanie Hsu were all nominated as well.

There was plenty of drama in said Best Actress category, where Ana de Armas (Blonde) and perhaps more surprisingly, Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie), were both nominated over Black performers Viola Davis (The Woman King) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till).

Steven Spielberg‘s The Fabelmans will see its Best Picture chances questioned after missing out on a nomination for Film Editing, which many pundits consider a significant bellwether for the evening’s top prize. Despite some initial panic following the SAG nominations, Michelle Williams did find herself nominated for Best Actress, while Judd Hirsch earned a Supporting Actor nod over his co-star Paul Dano.

Netflix’s German-language film All Quiet on the Western Front did quite well, and clearly has a lot of support within the Academy, as does Triangle of Sadness, which picked up nods for writing and directing in addition to Best Picture.
