SAG Award Nominations Reveal Love for CODA, Gucci and Squid Game

The Screen Actors Guild has announced its 2022 film and television nominees. House of Gucci and The Power of the Dog led the pack on the big screen with three nods apiece, while Succession and Ted Lasso cleaned up on the TV side with five nods each.

Despite picking up individual nominations for Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee, The Power of the Dog was not included among the guild’s nominees for Best Ensemble. That lineup features Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, House of Gucci and King Richard, although only five actors from those films earned individual nods — Caitrona Balfe, Troy Kotsur, Lady Gaga, Jared Leto and Will Smith. Don’t Look Up managed to earn a Best Ensemble nod despite the fact that none of its actors were nominated as individuals.

In a boon for inclusion, the three deaf actors in CODA — Kotsur, Marlee Matlin and Daniel Durant — represent the first disabled performers to receive nominations in the SAG Awards’ 28-year history.

Some awards pundits view SAG’s Best Ensemble award as a predictor of Best Picture, and while it’s certainly helpful, it’s not necessary for an Oscar win. In fact, only one of the last four Best Picture winners took home SAG’s top prize, and that was Parasite in 2020. Nomadland (2021), Green Book (2019), and The Shape of Water (2018) all missed out.

On the TV side, Yellowstone finally broke through with voters in its fourth season, landing a Best Ensemble nod along with fellow drama series The Handmaid’s Tale, The Morning Show, Squid Game and Succession. I feel like three of those shows stand a legitimate chance to win, while the Best Ensemble award for comedy series could go to any of the nominees, which include The Great, Hacks, The Kominsky Method, Only Murders in the Building and Ted Lasso. OK, so maybe The Komsinky Method doesn’t really stand a chance, but the nomination is impressive on its own.

Otherwise, recent Emmy winners Kate Winslet, Evan Peters, Jean Smart, Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham all found themselves nominated by their peers, though they’ll have to contend with stars from HBO’s The White Lotus, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, and Netflix’s Squid Game, which became the first foreign-language series to earn a Best Ensemble nomination, as well as the first Korean series.

Squid Game is just the fourth project with an all-Asian or majority-Asian cast to earn a Best Ensemble nod following Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, Parasite in 2020, and Minari last year. Its star Lee Jung-jae became the first male actor from Asia and Korea to receive an individual SAG nomination, and the second of Asian descent to receive one on the TV side following Darren Criss in 2019. Meanwhile, newcomer Jung Hoyeon became the second actress of Asian as well as Korean descent to do the same following Sandra Oh, who earned her third career nomination this year for another Netflix series, The Chair.

After going virtual last year due to the pandemic, the 28th Annual SAG Awards will take place on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. PT from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, and the show will air live on TNT and TBS. Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens announced this year’s nominations on Instagram Live, though it was previously announced that Helen Mirren would receive the guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
