The Society of Camera Operators (SOC) has announced that the recipients of Camera Operator of the Year in Film are Mitch Dubin, SOC, and “B” Camera John “Buzz” Moyer, SOC thanks to their work on West Side Story, while the recipients of Camera Operator of the Year in Television are Manolo Rojas, SOC, and “B” Camera Pauline Edwards, SOC, who worked together on the Snowfall Season 4 episode “Betrayal.”
The award recipients were celebrated by industry peers and colleagues during the virtual 2022 Society of Camera Operators Awards Celebration on Saturday night, which saw hundreds of viewers tune in from around the globe.
This year marked the first time the SOC expanded nominations to include collaborative efforts and teams of operators, allowing both “A” camera operators and “A” and “B” camera operator teams the chance to be recognized together.
Dubin and Moyer beat out stiff competition including Gilles Corbeil, SOC (Nightmare Alley); Matthew Moriarty, SOC (A Quiet Place Part II); David Thompson, SOC, with “B” Camera Ian Seabrook, SOC (Finch); and Mike Heathcote, SOC (The Many Saints of Newark).
Rojas and Edwards topped teams from Hawkeye, For All Mankind, Blindspotting, and Succession.
Danny DeVito was honored with the Governors Award during the virtual celebration, while Motion Impossible/AGITO Remote Dolly Systems and Cinema Devices/Ergorig System accepted SOC Technical Achievement Awards.
In addition to celebrating the achievements of the exceptional filmmakers and crews, the SOC Awards Celebration proudly welcomed Dr. Thomas Lee from the Vision Center at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to salute the success of the SOC’s continued support, including filming the charity’s fundraising videos.
Following the Awards Celebration, winners, nominees, and assorted guests were invited to virtual after-parties hosted by nominees in multiple breakout rooms, allowing attendees to not only chat (virtually) with the breakout room host but also with others on Zoom.
