By Design Day 2013 to Raise Funds for Industry Professionals in Need

-

By Design Day, the annual day of fundraising for Behind the Scenes in the U.S. and Canada, and Light Relief in the U.K., will take place on April 24 on both sides of the Atlantic.

One of the main fundraising events for these charities, By Design Day focuses attention on the various ways that individuals can support these two organizations, which are dedicated to assisting entertainment technology professionals in need. Behind the Scenes aids professionals based in the U.S. and Canada working in any area of the entertainment technology industry, while Light Relief assists those involved in the U.K. lighting industry. Fundraising can be a personal donation or an organized collection. Many designers support the day by voluntarily giving a day’s royalties to one or both of these charities.

Light Relief Day was first organized in the U.K. six years ago to honor the memory of the charity’s founder Tony Gottelier and quickly gained support. Two years later the U.S. and Canada joined in, to raise funds for Behind the Scenes. Now, By Design Day is supported internationally with donations from designers with productions all over the world. To date Light Relief has awarded more than £50,000 in grants to help lighting professionals and their families, while Behind the Scenes has issued over $325,000 in grants to professionals working in all disciplines.

Vicon Introduces Mobile Mocap at SIGGRAPH

1
Motion capture systems developer Vicon is previewing a futuristic new “Mobile Mocap” technology at SIGGRAPH 2011 in Vancouver. Moving mocap out of the lab and into the field, Vicon's Mobile Mocap system taps several new technologies, many years in the making. At the heart of Mobile Mocap is a very small lipstick-sized camera that enables less obtrusive, more accurate facial animation data. The new cameras capture 720p (1280X720) footage at 60 frames per second. In addition, a powerful processing unit synchronizes, stores, and wirelessly transmits the data, all in a tiny wearable design.
