On Saturday, May 27th Rooftop Films has announced that they will present the U.S. Premiere of Vanessa Stockley‘s The Genius and the Opera Singer, a nonfiction film about an embattled mother-daughter duo (92 and 55-years-old, respectively) living together in a rent-controlled West Village apartment. Set against the backdrop of a changing neighborhood, Stockley captures the pair’s volatile relationship with unfettered access and intimacy. To quote “think Grey Gardens, but replace the Old Society with Old New York.”
The screening will take place on the roof of New Design High School in the Lower East Side, New York and will feature live music, a post-screening Q&A with filmmaker Vanessa Stockley and titular “Genius” Jessica in attendance, and an after-party at DCTV, courtesy of Corona Extra, Tanqueray, Fever-Tree Tonic, and Freixenet.
