RED Digital Cinema Introduces V-RAPTOR [X] and V-RAPTOR XL [X]

RED Digital Cinema has released the first available large format global shutter cinema cameras, V-RAPTORTM [X] 8K VV and V-RAPTOR XL [X] 8K VV. The V-RAPTOR [X] introduces RED Global Vision — a new 8K VV global shutter sensor, enabling features such as Extended Highlights and Phantom Track. The new systems also boasts increased exposure times.

RED is proud these cameras featuring softer and more subtle highlight roll-off in uncontrollable environments, as well. In a nutshell, more color and detail all-around. The new systems are simply another advancement from RED, notably in the sensor department. “Ever since our sensor team cracked the code for a no-compromise global shutter sensor design in the original KOMODO, customers have been pushing us hard to bring our global shutter technology to our large-format sensors, and today we are happy to deliver beyond our wildest expectations” said RED Digital Cinema President Jarred Land. “We are very proud to not only be at the forefront of global shutter technology but also to be the first company delivering large format global shutter cameras to filmmakers.”

The [X] snsor captures 8K full sensor at up to 120 frames per second (150fps at 2.4:1), 6K up to 160 fps (200fps at 2.4:1), and 2K (2.4:1) at 600 frames per seconds. “Creating a global shutter sensor while maintaining dynamic range is almost impossible and then on top of that is the addition of an optional Extended Highlights mode. It shows we are pushing image processing far past the limits that were once believed and exceeding 20 stops of dynamic range. V-RAPTOR [X] and V-RAPTOR XL [X] are the result of years of incredibly difficult work internally by our world leading engineers and from the ongoing collaborative work with preeminent partners who bring invaluable experience and perspective to the process from cinema technology to virtual production, volumetric capture and live sports.”

The standard V-RAPTOR [X] costs $29,995; the XL version is $44,995.

Vicon Introduces Mobile Mocap at SIGGRAPH

Motion capture systems developer Vicon is previewing a futuristic new “Mobile Mocap” technology at SIGGRAPH 2011 in Vancouver. Moving mocap out of the lab and into the field, Vicon's Mobile Mocap system taps several new technologies, many years in the making. At the heart of Mobile Mocap is a very small lipstick-sized camera that enables less obtrusive, more accurate facial animation data. The new cameras capture 720p (1280X720) footage at 60 frames per second. In addition, a powerful processing unit synchronizes, stores, and wirelessly transmits the data, all in a tiny wearable design.
