Edward Douglas Ibold

Editor Doug Ibold, born Edward Douglas Ibold, passed away on November 8th in Burbank, California at the age of 83. Ibold’s family shared his passing was due to an unspecified cancer. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ibold famously crafted episodes of Law & Order, defining the modern day television procedural.

Ibold’s first editing gig was for John Lennon and Yoko Ono on the 1972 film, “Imagine.” He knew immediately editing was for him after his experience on that movie. Years later, he went on to collaborate with creator Dick Wolf on the original Law and Order, and he edited 49 episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The artist also spent time working on Miami Vice, Xena: Warrior Princess, and crafted 25 episodes of another iconic, era-defining television series, Magnum, P.I.

In an ACE Award Tribute Book, Liza Cardinale, ACE (Outlander), praised Ibold’s contributions to television as well as his endless creativity. “A restless spirit and boundless curiosity propelled him throughout his successful career, and made his list of accomplishments more varied than usually found on the resumes of prime-time television editors,” Cardinale wrote. “From jazz bass player to commercial director to rock ‘n’ roll cinematographer, and eventually to editor, Ibold always had his finger on the pulse of his time and managed to stay engaged and relevant as years went by.”
