IATSE president Matthew Loeb was re-elected by acclamation yesterday at the union’s 67th Quadrennial Convention, which wraps up today at the Boston Sheraton Hotel. Loeb will serve another four-year term in the position that he has held since 2008.

More than 800 delegates from nearly 400 locals in the U.S. and Canada contributed to the unanimous support for Loeb and the general executive board, which was also re-elected. Loeb and his slate of officers, (often referred to as “Matt’s Team”), ran unopposed.

In addition to general secretary-treasurer James Wood, the slate included 13 International vice presidents, three trustees and the delegate to the Canadian Labor Congress.

The theme of the convention was “the Pillars of Success: Leadership, Skills and Safety, Activism and Communication.”

“It is through these pillars, that we will strengthen the infrastructure over the next four years to ensure the success of this great union,” said Loeb.

During the last four years, Loeb has engineered organizing drives across the seven departments of the IA; increased training and emphasized the importance of safer working conditions; led the membership in supporting labor-friendly political candidates, and opened lines of communication through social media.

IATSE is one of the largest entertainment labor unions in the world, representing over 110,000 technicians, artisans and craftspeople employed in stagecraft, motion picture and television production, the trade show industry, and affiliated crafts throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Vicon Introduces Mobile Mocap at SIGGRAPH

1
Motion capture systems developer Vicon is previewing a futuristic new “Mobile Mocap” technology at SIGGRAPH 2011 in Vancouver. Moving mocap out of the lab and into the field, Vicon's Mobile Mocap system taps several new technologies, many years in the making. At the heart of Mobile Mocap is a very small lipstick-sized camera that enables less obtrusive, more accurate facial animation data. The new cameras capture 720p (1280X720) footage at 60 frames per second. In addition, a powerful processing unit synchronizes, stores, and wirelessly transmits the data, all in a tiny wearable design.
