On May 5, Cinema Makeup School will celebrate the close of its second decade. The school has asked Oscar-winning makeup artist Joel Harlow — known for his multiple iconic collaborations with actor Johnny Depp — to create an original, one-of-a-kind makeup piece to honor its anniversary.

Titled “Something Fishy This Way Comes,” the demonstration is Harlow’s take on a “deep one,” a creature originally dreamt up by classic horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. It will be applied and publicly displayed at Cinema Makeup School’s Los Angeles campus for the first time during the event, which is expected to draw major names from the monster makeup and special effects world.

In addition, the anniversary will feature the dedication of the school’s new makeup arts gallery, featuring a life-sized mermaid body sculpted by Harlow and additional works donated by other artists and effects labs.

Vicon Introduces Mobile Mocap at SIGGRAPH

1
Motion capture systems developer Vicon is previewing a futuristic new “Mobile Mocap” technology at SIGGRAPH 2011 in Vancouver. Moving mocap out of the lab and into the field, Vicon's Mobile Mocap system taps several new technologies, many years in the making. At the heart of Mobile Mocap is a very small lipstick-sized camera that enables less obtrusive, more accurate facial animation data. The new cameras capture 720p (1280X720) footage at 60 frames per second. In addition, a powerful processing unit synchronizes, stores, and wirelessly transmits the data, all in a tiny wearable design.
