The deal comes on the heels of the recently released DVD of Dead Hooker in a Trunk – the debut film from Twisted Twins Productions. Inspired by Robert Rodriguez‘s 1995 book Rebel Without A Crew, Jen and Sylvia Soska – identical twin sisters from Vancouver – produced Dead Hooker in a Trunk on a shoestring budget – writing, directing and staring in the film themselves, as well as doing their own stunts. The film went on to develop a cult following – touring film festivals and getting picked up by IFC Midnight.
“I first met the Soska Sisters online, when they started gauging my possible interest in the follow-up to their debut project Dead Hooker in a Trunk,” said MASTERSFX founder Todd Masters. “After watching that film, I realized I’d never seen a film like it before, nor had I ever done special FX like those before. So I quickly decided that I wanted MASTERSFX to play a ‘horrific’ role in their new project American Mary. It was something we simply had to do!”
American Mary is the story of a medical student, Mary, who becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted with medical school, and with the established doctors there she once idolized. The allure of easy money sends a desperate Mary to perform as an unqualified surgeon, working her way through a messy world of “underground surgeries” which leave more marks on her than on her freakish clientele.
“We fell in love with horror films by learning about the monster-makers behind the scenes – the artists who create the scares,” said the sisters in a statement. “Working with Todd and MASTERSFX on American Mary is an experience that takes our love of prosthetic effects to a whole new level. People who love horror films are sure to really dig the creations that Todd and his team will be presenting within this new flick!”
