The New York Times took its first step into virtual reality with the Nov. 8 release of the documentary short The Displaced. Directed by Vrse.worksImraan Ismail and The New York TimesBen Solomon, Company 3‘s Dave Hussey handled color correction for the film, which profiles three children caught in the global refugee crisis. Its release coincided with a feature article in the Nov. 8 edition of The New York Times Magazine.

The Times provided over one million Google Cardboard VR viewers to Sunday edition subscribers free of charge, letting subscribers easily view the film on their mobile devices via the new NYT VR app (available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play).

For The Displaced, Hussey carefully matched the look of the film to the photos in the corresponding Times Magazine article in order to lend a cohesive feel across mediums. He completed color grading on DaVinci Resolve.

Company 3 has an ongoing relationship with Vrse.works, recently providing color grading for their UN VR documentaries Clouds Over Sidra and Waves of Grace, and Guy Shelmerdine‘s VR music video Revolt for Muse.

Additional NYT VR projects, developed in conjunction with Vrse.works and colored by Company 3, are slated to roll out in the coming months.
