Submissons Open for 2022 SOC Technical Achievement Awards

The Society of Camera Operators (SOC) has opened submissions for eligible technologies for its Technical Achievement Award, and submissions are open now through November 30, 2022. This award is for technology used by the camera operator and camera crew during production.

There will be a fee of $1150 USD per submission. You are welcome to submit more than one technology product per company. Once your submission is received, you will receive an email from the SOC confirming the submission. At this time, you will be required to complete the payment details.

Once all submissions are received, the Technical Committee will set up an in-person review during Demo Day. Demo Day will be hosted in the Southern California area on Sunday, December 4, 2022, where entrants will have the opportunity to present their technologies in a hands-on demonstration. Details and schedule regarding Demo Day will be sent once the submission period closes.

After the in-person reviews at Demo Day, the technical jury will deliberate and select the award recipient. The SOC Technical Achievement Award will be presented at the SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards dinner and celebration on Saturday, February 25, 2023, hosted in person at the Loews Hollywood Hotel. Awards details and past recipients can be found on the Awards site:

Vicon Introduces Mobile Mocap at SIGGRAPH

Motion capture systems developer Vicon is previewing a futuristic new “Mobile Mocap” technology at SIGGRAPH 2011 in Vancouver. Moving mocap out of the lab and into the field, Vicon's Mobile Mocap system taps several new technologies, many years in the making. At the heart of Mobile Mocap is a very small lipstick-sized camera that enables less obtrusive, more accurate facial animation data. The new cameras capture 720p (1280X720) footage at 60 frames per second. In addition, a powerful processing unit synchronizes, stores, and wirelessly transmits the data, all in a tiny wearable design.
