Sound of Metal, Soul Are Motion Picture Winners at 57th Annual CAS Awards for Sound Mixing

caslogopngThe Cinema Audio Society (CAS) announced the winners of its 57th Annual CAS Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for 2020 in seven categories, as well as the Outstanding Product Nominations. The awards were handed out the evening of April 17 at a sealed envelope virtual event.

Sound of Metal won the category for Live Action Motion Picture, while Soul won yet another tech/craft award for Animated Motion Picture. The Queen’s GambitThe MandalorianThe Marvel Mrs. Maisel, and Hamilton continued their winning ways in the television categories.

CAS President Karol Urban, CAS – Re-Recording Mixer – came out to show some of the highlights of 2020 and induct the new board of directors and introduce the In Memoriam segment to honor those we’ve last over the past year, not only those in the sound and engineering field but also filmmakers and other important figures in sound mixing like Rupert Neve.

Filmmaker and actor George Clooney was presented with the Cinema Audio Society Filmmaker award by Randy Thom, CAS – Re-Recording Mixer, who mixed the sound for Clooney’s The Midnight Sky and his directorial debut, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Randy’s intro was followed by tributes from actor Richard Kind, Producer Grant Heslov.

Production Sound Mixer William B. Kaplan CAS was honored as this year’s Cinema Audio Society Career Achievement Honoree, presented by CAS Board Member Amanda Beggs, CAS – Production Mixer, who had been mentored by Kaplan. Her introduction was followed by video messages from the likes of Director Robert Zemeckis, Sound Tech Robert Giordano, Director John Landis, all of them telling stories about Kaplan, who had mixed movies, such as Animal HouseForrest Gump, The Blues Brothers, Back to the Future and more.

Sherry Klein, CAS – Re-Recording Mixer presented this year’s Student Recognition Award to Brandyn JohnsonUniversity of Southern California, Los Angeles, California.
