Annie Awards: Netflix Dominates With 50 Nominations, Including 9 for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

-

Netflix dominated the Annie Awards nominations on Tuesday, earning 50 nods overall between its animated movies and TV shows, including nine nominations for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio — the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which the Mexican maestro co-directed with Mark Gustafson, is up for Best Feature along with two other Netflix movies — The Sea Beast and Wendell & Wild — as well as Disney-Pixar’s Turning Red and DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

A24’s Marcel the Shell With Shoes On was nominated in the indie feature category along with Inu-Oh from Science SARU, My Father’s Dragon from Cartoon Saloon and Netflix, plus Charlotte and Little Nicholas, Happy as Can Be. Meanwhile, Marcel director Dean Fleischer-Camp and his collaborators Kirsten Lepore and Stephen Chiodo, are up for the Best Feature Direction prize along with big names like del Toro and Gustafson, Domee Shi (Turning Red), and Henry Selick (Wendell & Wild).

On the TV side of things, the Netflix series Love Death + Robots earned six nominations, while the most recent “Treehouse of Horror” episode of The Simpsons also scored a nod in the “mature” category along with Harley Quinn, Rick and Morty, Bob’s Burgers, and Tuca & Bertie.

Additionally, the Annie Awards will honor several animation industry figures, including Writer-Director/Pixar CEO Pete Docter, TV series creator Craig McCracken, short film director Evelyn Lambart, author/historian/educator Mindy Johnson, and voice actor John Omohundro.

Created by iconic voice actor June Forey, who died in 2017 at the age of 99, and now presented by ASIFA-Hollywood, the Annie Awards are now celebrating their 50th year, and the org’s leaders will celebrate the milestone with its first in-person awards show since the pandemic began, as last year’s ceremony was a virtual event. This year’s Annie Awards will take place on Saturday, Feb. 25 at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
