Golden Globes Nominations: The Banshees of Inisherin and Abbott Elementary Lead the Pack; Tom Cruise Snubbed

-

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominees for the 2023 Golden Globes on Monday morning. The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once led the way with eight and six nominations, respectively, while The Fabelmans and Elvis followed with five nods apiece.

The biggest acting snubs were likely that of Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick) in the Best Actor race and Danielle Deadwyler (Till) in the Best Actress race, though Will Smith was also ignored for Emancipation, and Amazon’s expensive Lord of the Rings series failed to land a single nomination. Meanwhile, others will surely complain that there are no women nominated for either Best Director or Best Screenplay.

The Golden Globes have zero bearing on the Oscars, as there is no overlap between voters, though some pundits will argue that it remains an important bellwether for the season, even after the slew of negative headlines surrounding the HFPA over the last few years.

Brendan Fraser, who was nominated for his performance in The Whale, has signaled that he will not attend the Golden Globes due to his history with the organization (he previously accused former HFPA head Philip Berk of groping him), though sources indicate that Steven Spielberg (whom the industry takes its cues from) will attend the ceremony in support of his film The Fabelmans.

On the TV side, Abbott Elementary led the way with five nominations, while The White Lotus, The Crown, Dahmer, Pam & Tommy, and Only Murders in the Building also fared well, scoring four nods each. In terms of the overall tally, HBO and Netflix led the pack with 14 nominations, beating out Hulu, which picked up 10 nods.

Jerrod Carmichael will host the 2023 Golden Globes, which will air on Tuesday, Jan. 10 on NBC, which brought back the broadcast on a one-year, trial basis.
