Over the Weekend 3/29/21: NAACP Image Awards Handed Out, Godzilla vs. Kong Rules Overseas and More News

-

It’s the last Monday of March, and we’re now fully into the Spring where more productions are gearing up, while a few have just wrapped.

Scott Derickson‘s The Black Phone is one of the latter as Derickson and his co-writer C. Robert Cargill announced on Twitter over the weekend the finishing of filming in Wilmington, North Carolina:

52ndNAACPImageAwardsThis year’s 52nd NAACP Image Awards took place virtually over a number of days, but they saved the biggest awards for the weekend as they wrapped up with the last of the movie and TV series awards in acting with Sony Pictures’ Bad Boys for Life winning for Outstanding Motion Picture.

The NAACP gives out Image Awards in a lot of different categories, including music, literature, politics and sports, but we’re going to stick with the movie and television awards.

Nobody
Bob Odenkirk in Nobody

On Friday, Universal Pictures released the Bob Odenkirk revenge thriller into 2,460 theaters where it grossed an estimated $6.7 million, which was enough for it to be #1 at the domestic box office. Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon dropped to second place with $3.5 million to bring its total to $28.4 million. The even bigger story at the box office took place overseas as Warner Bros‘ Godzilla vs. Kong, which opens in North America on Wednesday, grossed $121.8 million in 38 countries overseas this past weekend with $70.3 million in China alone, which is more than the $66 million made by its 2019 predecessor Godzilla: King of Monsters in China, and that didn’t have a pandemic to contend with either. There’s a good chance that Godzilla vs. Kong might have one of the biggest domestic openings since the pandemic began, and that’s despite the movie also being available to HBO Max subscribers.

Just as Friday’s “End of Week Production Notes” went “to press,” Warner Bros. Pictures released the first trailer for James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad, the sequel to the 2016 movie with a mostly new group of supervillains being forced into being heroes. Warner released a Red Band trailer, so you’ll need to click on the below and go to YouTube to view it:
