With the month-long #NetflixFYSee celebration in full swing, Netflix continues to invite you to their upcoming event! On Friday, June 9, #NetflixFYSee is bringing its popular original, A Series of Unfortunate Events, to life featuring a conversation with renowned director, Barry Sonnenfeld and stars, Neil Patrick Harris, Alfre Woodard, and K. Todd Freeman.
Based on the children’s novel series of the same name by Lemony Snicket, A Series of Unfortunate Events, has been revived with Netflix’s own adaptation, bringing back Barry Sonnenfeld after he left the original movie version of the franchise back in 2004. With Netlix, Sonnenfeld felt that he was given free rein to do his job by not having to adhere to the stringent instruction of traditional studio showrunners. In an interview with Vulture back in January, Sonnenfeld mentioned that in this version, he could depict Lemony Snicket with more of an onscreen presence, opposed to the more narrating role Snicket had in the movie adaptation.
Sonnenfeld has described the casting of Harris, Woodard, and Freeman as completing 80% of the directing since they all seemed to “get the tone of the books intuitively.” Regarding Neil Patrick Harris specifically, Sonnenfeld further stated in an interview with Indiewire that, “Harris as Count Olaf is extraordinary…whether he’s Shirley, Count Olaf, Captain Sham, or Stephano, he’s extraordinary. He should be nominated for four different Emmy awards for each one of his roles.”
Veteran to the Emmy scene, Alfre Woodard, joins the cast as Aunt Josephine, the frightful and grammar fanatic of Lake Lachrymose. Aside from her role in A Series of Unfortunate Events, Woodard is adorned with Emmy wins for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (1981), Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series (1992), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Special (1997), and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series (2003).
Tony nominated actor, K. Todd Freeman, also joins the cast as Arthur Poe, banker of the Baudelaire fortune. Come take part in the conversation this Friday night with the star-studded cast and director/EP of Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.
