In a story first broken by Deadline Hollywood, Red Digital is suing Sony for patent infringement seeking damages and an injunction to stop the manufacture and sale of Sony F65, F55 and F5 cameras and have existing units destroyed.

Eccentric RED founder Jim Jannard is basing his lawsuit largely on a patent application for the “Video Camera” which was filed Aug. 3, 2012. No one noticed when the patent was granted in late January.

The suit alleges that Sony’s “willing and wanton” infringement has “resulted in lost sales, reduced business and profit of RED, and greatly injured the general reputation of RED.”

Red is seeking an undetermined amount in damages. “These profits and damages can not be accurately ascertained without an accounting.”
