On Sunday night, April 11, 2021, the Guild of Music Supervisors (GMS) handed out its 11th Annual Guild of Music Supervisors awards, celebrating outstanding achievement in the craft of Music Supervision in film, television, games, advertising, and trailers.
Maureen Crowe, the founding President of the Guild of Music Supervisors, received the organization’s prestigious Legacy Award, honoring those music supervisors who have excelled within the craft of music supervision. Presented by Kenny Ortega, the presentation went through Crowe’s amazing history in the music business, and it included tributes from the likes of Kevin Costner, Debbie Allen, Clive Davis, Jay Landers, Dean Pitchford, Michael A. Levine, Neil Meron, Ricky Minor, and more.
This year’s Icon Award honoree was the legendary Quincy Jones, presented by the one and only Stevie Wonder with tributes by Lionel Ritchie, Mary J. Blige, Robin Thicke, John Legend, Jacob Collier, Diane Warren, and Gloria and Emilio Estefan.
The show kicked off with Oscar nominee Andra Day singing “Tigress and Tweed” from The United States vs. Billie Holiday, and the show included musical performances by Angelica Garcia; Darius de Haas singing his GMS-nominated song “One Less Angel” from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; and Celeste, whose song “Hear My Voice” from the film The Trial of Chicago 7, co-written with Daniel Pemberton, won in the “Best Song Written and/or Recorded for a Film.” Celeste closed the ceremony by performing it.
Pixar Animation‘s Soul continued its dominance with Tom MacDougall winning for “Best Music Supervision for Film Budgeted Over $25 million” while Promising Young Woman and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom received awards for their music supervision after both won multiple awards from other groups including BAFTA.
HBO‘s Watchmen won two awards from the guild for Music Supervisor Liza Richardson, the first for overall music supervision and the second for the song “The Way It Used to Be” by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
