Mixed Bag of Awards Handed Out on First Televised Broadcast
The fifth night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards was quite a bit different from the first four nights, in part because they were televised on FXX, but also, the Television Academy had set up a virtual press room where questions could be asked of some of the night’s winners. Some of the night’s presenters were at the Television Academy at the Saban Media Center, while others had presumably prerecorded intros for their respective categories. Once again, Nicole Byer from “Nailed It” hosted Night 5.
We’re also going to do something a little different here, because this is Below the Line, so we’re going to start with the below the line winners of the night rather than going in order of presentation.
HBO’S Watchmen added two more Emmys to its take, one for Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series, Movie or Special to Victoria Thomas, CSA and Meagan Lewis, CSA and another for Sound Editing in the same category, which was accepted by Supervising Sound Editor Brad North for his team.
Disney+ also continued its own success in the Creative Arts Emmys with two more, one for Ryan Watson’s Stunt Coordination, and another for Outstanding Composition – Original Dramatic Score, which went to Ludwig Göransson for “Chapter 8: Redemption.”
Another regular Emmy winner, Amazon Prime Video‘s much-lauded The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel added two more Emmys to its growing stack with the award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single Camera Series (One Hour) to M. David Mullen for the episode “It’s Comedy or Cabbage.” Later, Ron Bochar accepted the Emmy for Sound Mixing for his team’s work on the episode “A Jewish Girl Walks Into the Apollo…”
John Hodgman presented the Emmy for Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction to Trevor Brown for Saturday Night Live “Host: John Mulaney,” and Drew Scott presented Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program to The Crown’s Martin Childs for “Aberfan.”
Nena Erb and Lynarrion Hubbard were presented the Emmy for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture-Editing Comedy Series for their work on the “Lowkey Trying” episode of Insecure.
The Outstanding Contemporary Make-Up, Non Prosthetic Emmy went to the team behind HBO’s Euphoria, “And Salt the Earth Behind You,” consisting of Department Head Doniella Davy, Assistant Department Head Kirsten Sage Coleman and Makeup Artist Tara Lang Shah. Brandee Evans from P. Valley presented Outstanding Contemporary Costume to Debra Hansen and Darci Cheyne for their work on the series finale “Happy Ending” from Schitt’s Creek. Outstanding Period and/or Character Hairstyling went to Netflix’s Hollywood episode “A Hollywood Ending,” its Department Head Hairstylist Michelle Ceglia and her team.
The Outstanding Choreography for a Variety or Reality Programming Emmy was handed out by Cheryl Burke, going to Al Blackstone for his work on So You Think You Can Dance, specifically the routes for “I’ll Be Seeing You,””Mambo Italiano,” and “The Girl from Ipanema.”
Mason Nicoll and Peter Pak won the Emmy for Outstanding Main Title Design for their intro to the EPIX series, Godfather of Harlem.
Presented by Desus and Mero, the Outstanding Variety Special (pre-recorded) went to Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones, which would later win for Outstanding Director for Variety Series, going to Stan Lathan, and Outstanding Writing in the same category.
Eddie Murphy won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his stint hosting Saturday Night Live, and a few minutes later, Maya Rudolph won her second Emmy of the week for her own guest spot on the same episode, playing Senator (and now Vice Presidential candidate) Kamala Harris.
A historic moment for this year’s Emmys was when Ron Chepas Jones was presented Outstanding Guest Actor In a Drama Series for his stint as William Hill on NBC’s This Is Us. Two nights prior, his daughter Jasmine Chepas Jones won an Emmy for the Quibi series, #FreeRayShawn, making it the first time in Emmy history where a father and daughter won in the same year.
The always-wonderful Cherry Jones received her second Emmy, this time for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Program, playing Nan Pierce on the “Tern Haven” episode of HBO’s Succession.
RuPaul once again won Outstanding host for a Reality or Competition Program for RuPaul’s Drag Race, while Cheer won the Emmy for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. Later, RuPaul would present Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Film to Producer Jason Hehir for ESPN’s The Last Dance.
Going back to the top of the evening, the very first Emmy of Night Five was handed out by comedian Wanda Sykes to Executive Producer Dan Harmon for Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty (“The Vat of Acid” Episode), which won for Outstanding Animated Program.
Outstanding Television Movie went to Cory Finley’s Bad Education, starring Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney, which was accepted by Producer Eddie Vaisman.
Daryl Mitchell presented Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking to Ferras Fayad’s excellent doc, The Cave, which also received an Oscar nomination earlier in the year. It was accepted by Producers Kirstine Barfod and Sigrid Dyekjær.
Actor Giancarlo Esposito presented the Outstanding Children’s Program to two shows, Netflix’s Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, accepted by Exec. Producers Halle Stanford and Lisa Henson, and the Mahershala Ali executive produced We Are the Dream: The Kids of the Oakland MLK Oratorical Fest.
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards even had an award for Outstanding Commercial, which went to Back to School Essentials – Sandy Hook Promise, while the Outstanding Interactive Extension of a Linear Program went to USA Network’s Mr. Robot Season _4.0 ARG.
After five nights of Creative Arts Emmy Awards, HBO and Netflix are tied with 19 Emmys apiece with HBO having 16 awards for individuals and 3 for programs while Netflix has 5 programs honored and 14 individual Emmys. Disney+ has won its first eight Emmys, one for a program, tying with veterans NBC who took home the same. Disney+’s The Mandalorian and HBO’s Watchmen are currently tied with 7 Emmys apiece, although Watchmen has more Emmy nominations in categories being presented during the main show on Sunday night.
