Digital Domain announced that it has hired O.D Welch as president. In his new role, Welch will manage all aspects of the day to day operations at Digital Domain’s Playa Vista, Calif. facility and Vancouver’s two locations. A 30 year industry veteran, Welch has extensive experience in visual effects and production management.

“We are thrilled that a person of O.D.’s experience and talent has joined our family at Digital Domain,” said Daniel Seah, CEO, Digital Domain 3.0 and chairman and CEO, Digital Domain Holdings. “As we continue to expand and find new and exciting ways to showcase our artist’s great talent we needed to find the perfect person to support, challenge and lead this team on a day-to-day basis.”

“I am honored to become part of such an illustrious, award-wining company,” said Welch. “And while it’s true that DD has accomplished some incredible things over the years, I firmly believe its best days still lie ahead. My goal is to ensure that DD is doing ground breaking work for a long time to come.”

Welch previously served at Cameron Pace Group, Prime Focus Limited and 525 Studios. He is also a member of the Producer’s Guild of America, the Visual Effects Society, the International 3D and Advanced Imaging Society and a charter member of the Hollywood Post Alliance.

Vicon Introduces Mobile Mocap at SIGGRAPH

1
Motion capture systems developer Vicon is previewing a futuristic new “Mobile Mocap” technology at SIGGRAPH 2011 in Vancouver. Moving mocap out of the lab and into the field, Vicon's Mobile Mocap system taps several new technologies, many years in the making. At the heart of Mobile Mocap is a very small lipstick-sized camera that enables less obtrusive, more accurate facial animation data. The new cameras capture 720p (1280X720) footage at 60 frames per second. In addition, a powerful processing unit synchronizes, stores, and wirelessly transmits the data, all in a tiny wearable design.
