Regional Roundup

By Judy-Anne Goldman
To promote comprehensive coverage of crew news across the country, Below the Line is initiating a monthly column featuring regional events, awards, and general news. Not only will crew be able to learn about film production information from their local, they’ll be able to keep abreast of reports from future on-location shoot areas.
The following briefs include announcements from regional film commissioners who attended the AFCI Locations Expo in Santa Monica last month. The AFCI (Association of Film Commissioners International) is the official worldwide film association of government film contacts. Drawing film commissions from all over the world, the AFCI Locations Trade show is the industry’s largest locations and location services exhibition. More than 120 film commissions were represented this year at AFCI’s 17th annual event. The exhibition is pivotal in encouraging film production in the represented regions.
Crane Productions of New Britain has been named a winner in two categories of the 24th Annual National Telly Award competition. Crane received a ‘Bronze Telly’ for the “2002 V2500 Operator’s Conference,” a video and CD-ROM created for IAE, International Aero Engines AG of East Hartford. Crane Productions also received a ‘Bronze Telly’ in the Public Relations category for A Face to Remember, an enlightenment video produced for the Avon-based Cornelia de Lange Syndrome Foundation. Competition for the annual Telly is open to all television, commercial and video production industry professionals in the United States and is intended to give national recognition to outstanding non-network, non-broadcast productions.
Crew Advancement: Mary Bart Houston (Production Manager) and Marc Firstein (intern) have both joined Television Interactive (TVI) as Associate Producers for the show Healthy Solutions. Jim Small (locations manager) is now a freelance locations scout. Jason Goldman, former FTC Production Coordinator has decided to return to school at PBCC and is now working for the film commission as the new Locations Manager.
Production Up/AFCI Awards: Santa Clarita reported a 96-production day increase for the month of February compared to their February average of 60 days. The area recently hosted three Fox films; Catch That Girl, Girl Next Door, and League of Extraordinary Gentleman. The Santa Clarita booth took home four marketing awards from the AFCI Locations Expo, including a website award and first place honors for the Most Informative Booth.
Crew members, production houses, film commissioners and other film professionals are encouraged to notify Below the Line of current newsworthy events, achievements or happenings from their specific region by email.
