The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) held their annual 2023 EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023, airing on BBC One and iPlayer at 7pm GMT, and livestreaming on Britbox in North America.
Martin McDonagh‘s The Banshees of Inisherin and Edward Berger‘s All Quiet on the Western Front took an early lead with McDonagh’s film receiving Supporting wins for Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan, while Berger’s WWI drama won “Best Feature not in the English Language,” as well as awards for James Friend‘s cinematography, for Volker Bertelmann‘s original score, and the film’s sound.
Each of them won the BAFTA for screenplay with Banshees taking Original Screenplay and All Quiet receiving the BAFTA for its Adapted Screenplay. Banshees also unsurprisingly won Best British Film. Possibly one of the biggest shockers of the night would be Berger winning Best Director over McDonagh and yesterday’s Directors Guild Awards winners, Daniels Kwan and Scheinert, but then, it also won Best Film.
All Quiet on the Western Front ended up winning seven BAFTAs tonight, giving it a good push leading into Oscar voting in two weeks.
The Daniels’ presumptive Best Picture frontrunner, Everything Everywhere All at Once, won the BAFTA for Film Editing over both the above films, but that was it.
Baz Luhrmann‘s Elvis won BAFTAS for its casting, its hair and makeup, and for Catherine Martin‘s costume design, and Austin Butler won the price for Leading Actor over Inisherin‘s Colin Farrell. Cate Blanchett ended up winning Leading Actress, and that was the only prize given to Todd Field‘s TÁR.
Florencia Martin followed her ADG Award win for her Production Design on Damien Chazelle‘s Babylon with a BAFTA win for her work, this one shared with her Set Decorator, Anthony Carlino.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Navalny received the BAFTA for Animated and Documentary Feature, respectively. James Cameron‘s Avatar: The Way of Water won the BAFTA for its visual effects.
Following her win at the DGAs on Saturday, Charlotte Wells won the BAFTA for Best Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. Emma Mackey, whose new movie Emily just opened in New York and L.A., received the E.E. Rising Star Award, which is voted on by the public.
